What in the World is Worldview?

This is a critical aspect for understanding your life!!!

"The core issue in understanding and relating to our current culture is the concept of Worldview. A distinct worldview underlies every cultural form, and our personal worldview determines the degree to which we surrender ourselves to any culture."  J. P. Moreland is professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University in La Mirada, California.

Definition:  Worldview:
The varying ways that people individually view the world, and their experiences and opportunities within the world.

It is a set of deeply held beliefs that makes us who we are - that color our actions and daily activities.  Worldview is the filter (a colored lens through which we look) that helps us to make sense of or to order the data and stimuli that we encounter in
our daily lives, whether in our own culture or in another.

OR Think of WORLDVIEW this way, ( a bit over simplified, but it should help...) IF you are a political liberal, the lens in your glasses is...let's say, BROWN. You came to a liberal perspective through a multitude of experiences, education, political and family influences etc, etc.  Each time that you look at the world, you see a BROWN tint to it and you have a difficult time understanding why everyone else does not ALSO see BROWN

BUT if you are conservative politically, for sake of this illustration you see BLUE. You also came to your position from multitude of experiences, education, family and political influences etc, etc. AND you too have a difficult time understanding why anyone could VIEW things differently!!

So one VIEWS the WORLD through BROWN lenses and the OTHER through BLUE ones. You can argue all day long about who is right or wrong BUT the fact is you are LITERALLY viewing things from very different perspectives. THIS concept is true with all that you do in daily life and all that you ARE:  Religion, marriage, family, child rearing, national pride, culture etc.  YOUR Worldview (which can change) affects how you think, vote, see the world, worship, raise your kids, etc., etc.  Worldview to some degree is "corporate" {Americans think like this, OR Jews are like this or Ex-Marines or blondes are like that, and so forth) but Worldview is ultimately a personal and individual colored lens that you look through, that stems from corporate experience.

To help cement this concept, consider this:
Americans in general have a basic worldview and it is very different from the general and basic worldview of Iraq or Mongolia.  THEN, as you begin to look at things more closely you have smaller groups within a country that have slightly or fairly divergent views.

Example:
Three men, A New York Jew, a Southern Christian and a Midwestern Muslim.
All three are Americans and would fight in the same foxholes to keep our country free, yet in multiple ways, they see many things quite differently.  They view life, family, work, politics and recreation differently.  Don't get me wrong, they have MUCH in common as humans and perhaps even went to College together, YET they see things through a slightly different colored lens!!! - Think about it, are Roman Catholics and Evangelical Christians alike and will they see the world, their families, politics, et cetera, the same way - even though they have much in common?  They are similar YET different because of their Worldviews!!!

Other Examples:

Consider this:  Envision growing up in rural Kenya, with your parents and 6 brothers and sisters.  Your days consist of finding water, and foraging for food.  The ground is very dry and it is not possible to plant any type of garden.  You experience the deaths of 3 siblings, two from animal attacks, and one from malnutrition.  From these experiences and the training and “outlook” from your parents, you developed a worldview.  (You are NOT necessarily unhappy, but you have a view of the world that is colored or tainted from your experiences).  --  When An American comes to visit Kenya and speaks to you and others about the great opportunities for fun, food, and leisure in America and other places, do you have any context for which to understand his statements?  When you tell him about hunting gazelles for food (and he is a member of an anti-hunting club) does the American understand your worldview?  How might you as a Kenyan, view the world?   You would possibly describe the world as harsh, difficult, and unforgiving.

Now picture growing up in Middle America in a nice middle class home, with good schools, friends, toys, and opportunities for fun, food, and leisure.  When you are asked to describe the world and the future you expect, how would your answer differ from the Kenyan?

NOW, add just a few variables to either example above.  One parent, not two, or an alcoholic abusive parent, poor, very rich, fearful personality, Christian, Hindu or Muslim (each one is very different by themselves), male, female, obese, very athletic, NOT athletic, love school and have a lot of education, hate school, energetic, high drive personality, lethargic, super laid back, handicapped, etc, etc, etc.  – You can begin to see that many factors go into making our worldview.  And when factors change in our lives, it will often affect our worldview.

Now, that you have changes or added a few factors,
how do you view the world around you???

We all have a "plumb line" or a basis of truth by which we gauge all of our decisions and opinions as well as those of others.  That plumb line ultimately determines our worldview.

The tables below depict the worldview positions of

DO these concepts make sense?  IF NOT, do NOT hesitate to contact me.  Worldview is a critical concept - you have one and if you do not understand why you think the way you think, you'll make mistakes , create personal mishaps and communicate poorly in your daily experiences!!
