I Was a Fit & Healthy
College Athlete, Until
One Unsuspecting Day, I was Dealt A Hand I Had Never Prepared For...
and Here's How I Overcame it...
And So Can You In Spite of Your Circumstances!!
At last, some Proven Advice for
Building a Winners Attitude, a Persevering Spirit, and Personal Success
Even Though You're Handicapped or Living with Someone Who is...
And
you can be well on your way in about 3 hours time!
Central California, 2007
Hi,
I'm Mark Whyte. My wife Katie and I are considered somewhat
experts in the area of disabilities. And while being called experts makes us both a
bit nervous, I suppose we really are. You see, I (Mark) have been
seriously handicapped for 30 years. Katie is on the other
side of disability. She's able-bodied and is both an RN and a
masters level Speech Pathologist. Being married to Katie keeps me going (she often jokes that marrying her was the best
decision I ever made...it was by the way!). Katie's
current job role has her working with
handicapped high school kids.

AND
to top it off, we have a son who's autistic!
Finally,
two experts lay it on the line and talk honestly about Living Life
and Loving each other in spite Of Being Handicapped!
I
was one of those 20 year old invincible kids who thought he had the
world by the tale...and even if I did, sometimes with a mere "flick
of the tail" you can go sprawling...and I did!! I was on a
wrestling scholarship at a 2-year college in Kansas, with
aspirations of "making it to the big time - No, not the WWF - but rather a major 4 year
university to continue wrestling and go from there to the Olympics!"
So what happened?
Well,
like most of you reading this, I never gave much thought to how fast
things can change. These days, every time I pick up the paper
and read about yet one more car accident where a person died or was
severely injured, I think to myself: "Wow, becoming disabled can
happen so incredibly fast!" And of course accidents
can happen in
a thousand ways: cars, motorcycles, lightning strikes, war, gang
violence, work related, and even on vacation. And becoming
disabled through an accident doesn't take in to consideration all of
the birth defects, or diseases that can strike the unsuspecting and
make life pretty darn hard to live. It almost makes you want
to curl up around your fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and
never go outside...BUT, that's not reality is it?
Now
in my case, I broke my neck in a college wrestling match. It
started off like most other matches, but little did I ever dream
that this one could change my life for ever...and it did! Due
to some delays in the tournament, I didn't get a chance to
thoroughly warm up my muscles before the match and was called to
wrestle. Frankly, I was a bit disoriented
(my friends might say this is
normal, but I'm sure they're just trying to be funny...I think...).
My opponent came out and quickly took me to the mat and turned my
shoulders toward my back (not where you want to be as a wrestler).
That was not a problem, I knew what to do - so I simply bridged up
on my neck - a routine I've practiced literally thousands of times -
but this time, my neck snapped and broke at Cervical 6-7. At
that moment, I was paralyzed from the neck down...at that moment, I was entering the
whole new world of being a "quadriplegic!"
Over
the years, my recovery has been better than many, but nonetheless,
I've been assigned to crutches, and more recently (on occasion) a
wheelchair for 30 years. I've gone thru surgeries, the
onset of arthritic joints, massive leg spasms, shoulder degeneration
and pain (from using crutches) and so much more...
Who
is this Mark Whyte guy?
Believe me
I'm far from perfect. I'm NOT a Type "A" personality
(I wish I was at times), I'm NOT a perfectionist and I'm not
especially skilled or disciplined...BUT, I am someone who
has been there-done that and lived to talk about it.
After my broken neck, I
went back and earned my bachelor's degree and 2 master's
degrees, I've lived and worked in Europe and taught in
Africa, and currently teach as adjunct faculty at the
college level.
Honestly, I'm not the best dad, but I'm a pretty good one, and my
husband skills lack here and there, yet, Katie's not
complaining - Why is that?
It's all about
choosing to get up
in the morning, while maintaining a sense of hope for the
day ahead and putting one foot (or roll a wheel) in
front of the other, and getting busy with life...even if
you're disabled. And my view is that we can all do that, it just might take a bit of
help to get started - a bit of encouragement!
And that's
the bottom line of what I'm all about...getting up,
starting again, and helping others to do the same. |
What's your
story?
Since you're here on this site, I'll assume that
you are likely in 1 of 3 categories: You're handicapped, you are
married to someone who is (or contemplating it) or your a care
giver/Special-Ed teacher, nurse, or other hands-on kind of friend.
Perhaps you are struggling with depression or simply don't know how
to move on with your life and maintain a sense of dignity, and joy!
Or you're watching someone who fits that description. If
so...as the old adage goes: "You've come to the right place!"
Imagine... You CAN Live A Better Life
With A Disability - Starting In Just 3 Hours!
Katie
and I are teachers - people who like to help others succeed.
So we've sat down and walked through the ups and downs of being
disabled, living successfully with someone who's disabled,
effectively assisting others who are handicapped and raising a child
who is disabled. We've "written" the process down for you and
put it in an audio-book we've called...
"Living
Large in spite of a Disability"
Proven
advice to Live better, love more and be a success!
You're
probably wondering what you'll hear on this audio book?? Here's
some of it -- For starters:
- Can
a handicap be conquered? Or are you doomed to live a
pitiful and depressing existence?
- Is
it possible to fall in love with a disabled person and
make it work out? How? What do you need to
know?
- How
to overcome past obstacles that keep you from
conquering your handicap and REALLY living life!
- Can
you maintain both your sanity and your marriage under
the extreme fatigue and pressures of raising a
handicapped child?
- What
issues do you need to consider BEFORE you start a
family?
- Where
does the strength come from to get up yet another day,
and start again?
- How
can you as a caregiver/friend or spouse be a genuine
help to a disabled person, without stripping them of
their dignity?
- Where
does the grieving process fit in the midst of a
disability? How do you keep that grief from
becoming depression?
- What do you say to
those people in the middle of a "grocery store" who say
condescending things - they may mean
well - but don't really understand the situation?
- What
does it mean to help a disabled person to accommodate,
contextualize and redefine success?
- How
can you be an effective parent if you're disabled and
how do you effectively parent a child with disabilities?
- Why
identifying and tightening your worldview (fancy term)
will improve your ability to live successfully, in spite
of your disability.
- What
does success really mean and which tools can help you
get there?
- And
so much more...
This
is a no-holds barred kind of discussion (what else would
you expect from an ex-college wrestler?) Look, we all know that life
can be hard and at times it feels down right cruel - and
yet, we all have a choice. We can curl up and die, or
start living life - EVEN if it's a different life than what
we were expecting as a 10 year old with dreams of being an
astronaut or an actress.
This audio package screams
from the roof tops: YES, it is POSSIBLE to live a large-life
as a handicapped person and YES it is possible
to survive a
marriage when one spouse is handicapped from day one or
becomes handicapped during the marriage. And YES, it
is possible to maintain your family even when you have a
child who is handicapped! |
The
3 hours of audio and all of it's added materials will both encourage and challenge you!
Take a look
at these screen shots of the package you'll
receive...it's a simple download that will open on your
desk top (Both windows and Mac). It looks a bit
like a browser window allowing you to listen to the
audios, read the materials and even connect to materials
on the web.
Screen #1
Below is the introduction page with the menu on
your left side

Screen
#2 below is the audio control -
just click and the audio will start up

Screen #3
Here are 3 shots of the menu open to different
sections - giving you a view of the amount of materials
included
Screen
#4 We also
provide guidelines and an outline to help you apply the
materials - because knowledge without application = nothing!

Screen#5
Frankly, this part is quite cool...it's a notes function
that allows you to open a document, begin reading and then
open up a "NOTES" box, take some notes, save it and
associate it with that page for later reference.

So
pardon me a moment while I get excited. Why?
Because
the Professor part of me gets "wound up" when I can put
together a product or in this case, an educational course
that is functional, easy to use AND one that I know will
challenge and encourage people to really grow and develop!!
THAT, makes me excited!! Honestly, I was pleased to
just put the audios together, but then I thought, "how about
adding the transcript of the audios? Then, what about
some further perspective on the concept of Living Large?
Hmmm...let me think, I could add this document and that
video, and theses ideas" and before you know it, I had quite
a package sitting before me...
Ok,
let me back up a moment...Have
you ever found yourself feeling a bit irritated when people describe hard
situations they're facing? I've heard people make
statements about being disabled that either comes off as
"Pollyanna," such as: "It'll all be just fine no matter what"
or on the flip side, having such a negative
attitude that you think to yourself, "Geesh, I've got to steer clear of
him. His attitude is venomous! He'll drive me
into the ground with his negative outlook on life!!"
Well,
if you have
ever experienced that (and if you
haven't, unfortunately you will at some point)
- Be
encouraged! Because on
this audio, Katie and I will give you straight talk - some of it painful,
some of it sharing our own failures, BUT all of it with a
sense of hope - and practical steps to direct you to
successful living. Life can be hard - but it's how we
respond that counts in the end.
Several
question have to be asked: At this point in
your life, Will you give up, or
press ahead? Will you whine, or consider your
disability as a life
lesson that will get you ever closer to your goals?
Will you continue to find convenient ways to put off
your growth, your skill development, your emotional
maturity, YET one more day, thinking that you can start on
it tomorrow?
When
will the excuses stop?
Today's a great day for that to happen!!
It's YOUR
choice...just as it was mine and Katie's.
