Part 1
How to Effectively Set Goals
Goal setting is not rocket science.  In fact you'll see from these 3 reports that the concepts are simple - the key is to implement each one.

In order to set effective goals here are some "start up" guidelines that you should follow for maximum impact.

One of the first things to do is be precise when you’re setting goals.  If possible include times, dates, and amounts so that you have a way to measure your achievement.  Just think of the satisfaction that comes from meeting a goal on time.

Setting priorities is another area of focus.  This is particularly helpful if you have several goals that you're wanting to achieve. Look at each goal and set the specifics for reaching it - this makes it easier to spend your time wisely.

Write your goals down on paper so that you avoid any confusion.  This gives your goals more power.  Try to keep most of your goals small while having one larger one.  You'll gain emotional and mental momentum as you you "check off" the smaller goals leading to the main one.

The above guidelines are a starting point that will help you begin to set your goals effectively and create the steps to achieve them.

General Principles of Goal Setting
Additional goal setting basic principles include:  Perhaps one of the most important things is that you should set the performance of your goals and not just the outcome of these goals.  Try to set goals over which you will still have a great deal of control so that you can guide your performance.  If you set a personal goal for which there are too many outside factors you made find that you are unable to achieve it.  Those goals that are based solely on their outcome depend too heavily on issues over which you often have no control.

When you base your goals on some knowledge or skill that you need to learn you’ll be able to keep a great deal of control over how and when you achieve them.  You may also find that you get much more satisfaction out of working towards these goals since you’ll be expanding your life experiences.

Create small steps that are clearly possible to accomplish in a short time.  Again, developing and maintaining momentum is important and small steps that you can easily check off are very useful.  Doing so will keep you highly motivated as you see consistent and incremental progress.
